Open Graph not workign for Linkedin was created by John Watt
Hi there, I've downloaded and installed the opengraph plug into my site which uses easyblog as the main blog system and is built on the joomshaper Helix Ultimate platform (I also have some pages build with SP Page Builder on the site)

I believe I have configured the plugin correctly but it doesn't appear to help with linkedin where I either get a grey box or the feed times out and linkedin tells me the site took too long to respond, presumably because it can't find all the info.
I have modified the image sizes on 1 page to match those in your documentaiton, it's this page here:
www.manycaps.com/blog/wrecking-a-company...-lack-of-debate.html
this again still doesn't work, I've attached a debug screenshot of it below.
I'd be keen for any suggestions on what I am missing

(Also I don't seem to be able to use any of the drop downs for thins like Twitter Card Customer image field or any of the customer fields but not sure this matters)

Hi John, thanks for reaching out here, let me see if I can help you.

I have looked at that page and see that ochOpenGraph adds the tags for both twitter and Opengraph, but i see a second set of OpenGraph tags als set on that page. Soo it looks like there is another plugin, template, easyblog also adding the tags: this should be turned of).
You can check this by searching in the page source for og:image, you will see that there are two of them pointing to the image.

(Also I don't seem to be able to use any of the drop downs for thins like Twitter Card Customer image field or any of the customer fields but not sure this matters)

These dropdowns are populated with Article Custom Fields: these need to be created first (if you want to use these), this will only work with Joomla Articles, EasyBlog has it's own system and doesn't use com_content (Joomla Articles). More info here: onlinecommunityhub.nl/joomla-extensions/...#custom-image-fields

So first thing to do is find out what is causing the second instances of the OpenGraph tags (other plugin, EasyBlog, Template).
If you want i can have a look for you, but for that I need back-end access.

Please also note that Linkedin (as does twitter and facebook) caches whatever is shared: I just ran the page through the facebook sharing debugger and got errors based on the page that was cached on feb 9th. Luckilly facebook Sharing debugger has the option to refetch the page and by doing that clear the facebook cache for that page. As you can see, all tags are now set correct (except for the tags being double).

developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/?q=h...-lack-of-debate.html

This shows how it will look like in facebook, and also Linkedin will display the correct image once they clear their cache.
To 'force' linkedin to clear their cache, you can add a query parameter to the url that you share (e.g. ?1=2). Linkedin caches on the url, so this is a new url being shared for which it will then get a fresh cached version.

As you can see: all is good on Linkedin (caching issue on their side)

Does this help John?

regards,
Ruud.

I can see the updates happen in facebook but I can't force linkedin to refresh, it just keeps telling me it's run out of time, the new link you used on FB works but if I try the same thing with another link nothing, have even tried running links through the Post Inspector for Linkedin but no luck

is there a way to completey clear linkedin cache?

Hi,
just logged in and changed to following setting in EasyBlog, this fixed the double opengraph tags, so here you are good to go:

learned something new today: the linkedin post inspector #whoot www.linkedin.com/post-inspector/inspect/...-lack-of-debate.html

For me your pages load correct on linkedin, what I did notice on your site is that when opening a blog, the displaying of the images lags behind (seconds), not only in the blog but also in your blog menu. So maybe linkedin times-out waiting for the image?

Not sure what is going on here, I can imagine that EasyBlog renders the images in different sizes and that this rendering takes time, but that should only happen the first time you display a blog, not every page refresh.

Maybe something to look at / investigate?

Thanks for solving that.
I believe that the delay in loading the image is from JCH Optimise I've disabled that and the images seem to be loading at the right time now

I cannot get anything to load in linkedin, at best I get a grey box and the message: Cannot display preview. You can post as is, or try another link.

Out of interest what are you doing to force the linkedin update? I have tried adding /?new1 after it and it'll try to crawl but then I get the error

probably lazyloading or some setting like that?

I just create a post and paste the url in it. then it just displays correct...

I use the LinkedIn Post Inspector (just learnied this thing exists): www.linkedin.com/post-inspector/
When you paste the URL in the inspector it will clean cache and fetch the image / description / title based on the og information.

For me this works (with your site).

Do you have by any change some kind of 'firewall' active that blocks bots? I troubleshooted some linkedin issues some time ago and it turned out that that site blocked all bots / crawlers. Linkedin uses a bot to fetch the data to display.

But if you do, then it would also block me sharing something from your site...

just guessing here :S

hi there,

thanks,

no I don't have any firewalls as far as I know. I have even added some explicit instructions in my robots.txt file to ensure the bots work, twitter bot for example works perfectly now for the twitter cards after your plugin, it's always been able to take the links but never as the card so that's a great step.
When I use post inspector I don't get any result at all for any of my pages!

Robots.txt bot entry:

User-agent: *
Disallow:

User-agent: Twitterbot
Disallow:

User-agent: LinkedInBot
Disallow:

Hi John, as for the Linkedin Post Inspector not working on your side, it works for me for all the URL's I have tried from your website (although the Post Inspector is not very fast to generate the preview, it always does generate it).

Maybe you can try to ask somebody in your network to give it a try with the urls of your site, just to be able to investigate if the issue is not linkedin side or even client side?

Not sure how to help otherwise as your site is now implementing all tags the correct way.

Hi Ruud,

thanks for all the help, I do appreciate it. I actually did ask a friend to do a link check for me and it worked fine for them which is really strange so I'm going back to LinkedIn to ask them to dig into things.
knowing that all the tags are working is great.

The other non easyblog pages are sp page builder, how do I use your set up for those pages?

Hi John,
if these pages are displaying Joomla articles, the tag should be added automatically.
if these pages display 'custom' content then you have two options:
1. add a tag to the text e.g. {_ochopengraph image="..."} etc. (without the _)
2. add a custom module to the page and add the tag in that module

see here for instructions: onlinecommunityhub.nl/joomla-extensions/...raph#manual-settings
