As the year draws to a close, it’s a natural moment for reflection, especially in our industry, where change is constant and long-term direction matters more than ever.
For decades, the tech world has repeated a familiar joke: “This will finally be the year of the Linux desktop.” It is a phrase that has carried equal parts optimism and irony for more than 25 years. That same question has followed Joomla for a long time as well: Will next year finally be the year of Joomla?

What if Joomla would get forked...
Something is keeping me wake at night. It is not the Corona virus and what that means for the world, it’s not that I am worried about my kids. It’s because of the current state of Joomla: a open source project that I hold dearly and that has been with me through ups and downs in my life.
I feel Joomla is going through a difficult time at the moment: the flagship product Joomla 3.9 has gone into retirement.
And that is not a bad thing: just like in nature, the old needs to die to make room for the new.
Does Open Source extension development pay off?
Friend: “Can you earn a living with Joomla extension development?”
Me: “No.”
Friend: “No? But why do you keep doing it?”
A start of a discussion I regularly have.
For me these discussions are always a reality check: ‘I can only spent my time once so am I still spending it on what I believe matters most?
Open Source? Je bedoelt Gratis?
Open Source, en dan met name Open Source software: je kunt er niet meer omheen. Wist je bijvoorbeeld meer dan 70% van alle webservers op het Internet draaien op Open Source Software?
Maar wist je bijvoorbeeld ook dat Linux (Open Source besturingssysteem) op dit ogenblik het meest geïnstalleerde besturingssysteem ter wereld is? De kans is dus groot dat ook jij (onbewust) Open Source software gebruikt.
