500 error - Cannot recover werd gestart door Paul Aydelott
When I installed the plugin on a new Joomla 6.1 site and enabled it, the website becomes inaccessible with the dreaded orange window. I have to disable the plugin for the website to function.

Hello Paul,
that is not good.
can you in your site (global config) enable debug and set error reporting to max. then enable the plugin and visit the front-end?
This will give the exact error on what is happening / missing.
Without this information it is impossible to troubleshoot.
regards,
Ruud.

Enabling debug allowed the system to run and process the images. Apparently, it was timing out before the page could render. All is well.
(You might want to warn people that it will take a while on first loading to compress the images.)
Thank you for your quick response!

hi,
okay, so it timed out.
yes, known 'issue': in advance settings you can set the maximum number of images to process on a visit: this is set by default to 0 (all).
in the new version that will be released june 2nd, I have improved this: it will time the conversions and before the server is about to timeout it will stop the conversion (to continue on the next visit).
Note that avif format takes a longer time to convert as webp.
you can also only enable conversion when a configured user is logged in on the front-end: that way regular visitors are not hit with the initial conversion load.
hope this helps.
thanks for reporting back!
feel free to ask or suggest: always good to discuss these things.
have a nice weekend,
Ruud.
