Good morning Andreas,
Curl is used to fetch the share counts from e.g. Facebook. A time out means that the provider is not responding back with the count number within the time out value.
This can have multiple reasons: e.g Facebook requires correct / working credentials to authorize your server to fetch the numbers. It can also be that you have a lot of pages and hit a limit with eg Facebook.
To get a clue as to what is going on on your site: do you have a page where count numbers are showing? Did you configure the Facebook tokens correct? Did you enable caching of counts (advanced settings) to avoid hitting the limit?
I am currently on holidays so I have very limited online possibilities :s

Hello, Thanks for the quick reply. It all worked out well. I've noticed this since the last Joomla update. Maybe we can analyze the problem after your vacation. I just don't know what to do next. Hi, Joomla comes with root certificates for functions like curl. These where old. In the last Joomla update they have been replaced with newer ones as using the old ones could lead to issues with the certificates not being accepted anymore (I had troubleshooted this for one of my clients site where the webshop payment stopped working due to this: needed to replace the Joomla certificates with new ones manually).
So this could also be a server issue. As said this is difficult to troubleshoot remotely.

Hi, unfortunately you are talking about things that I understand little about. :-) We can clarify this again after your vacation. What I could do now would be to move to another server. All I have to do is contact my provider. I've been working with Joomla for 14 years. But I'm not as deep in the matter as you are.
