Help me understand the renewal process was created by Alex Chartier
I am trying to understand when a renewal notice is set to a customer. Do they always get a renewal notice? Do they only get one if there is a discount for renewal?

I am trying to decide if we want to give a discount or simply a reminder, and how each would be configured.

Hi Alex,
Thanks for your question, let me explain.
first: all discounts / notifications can be configured globally (in the extension options), or on a product base (in the product itself).
The settings are the same so i will use the global extension options here.

In ochSubscriptions . options > tab 'Discounts / notifications' there are two settings when it comes to automatic renewals:
  1. Discount on Automatic Renewal: Yes / No
  2. Notification within # days
Both settings work independently.

The discount can be used as an incentive: give users a (higher) discount when they select to auto renew the subscription in the checkout, when selecting Yes, you can set the percentage that is deducted from the amount paid.

The notification is configured in number of days before the subscription expires, so 5 means 5 days before the subscription expires the notification mail is sent. Setting it to 0 disables the notification email.

Please note that I (and also the payment providers themselves) strongly advice to use the notification email. The reason is 'disputes': when a customer is charged an amount from e.g. his PayPal account and he forgot that he opted for automatic renewals, chances are high he will do a charge back in PayPal. Not only will the money be refunded to him, but you will also have to pay a dispute fine. You will be actually loosing money!

So the advice is to always notify the customer of the pending charge, so he can make sure there is enough balance in his account, or that he cancels the automatic subscription (and lets his subscription expire).
